The topics I chose pertain to music and Pokémon, both things I am highly passionate about. Within my personal essay, I dived into what I wanted to do and the path that led me to where I am now. I wanted this to be more of a serious look into my past, present and future. For my research project, however, I wished to go a bit outside the box. I have played Pokémon with my brother since I was a toddler, and on my own since elementary school. It was something that did and still brings my brother and I closer today, which is why I am still such an avid player of the series today. I have also made countless friends because of the Pokémon series, including my two best friends. We plan a trip to see each other each time a new game is released, and just play together for hours on end. This series is very dear to me.
The first genre I chose was a whimsical parody on how each game worked for myself as a child. When I was young, I used my starting Pokémon almost exclusively, and played in a very boring fashion. I used this genre composition to exploit this. The how-to-guide is aimed to walk new players through the new game as I would have years ago, as well as many other younger players would.
The second genre I chose was a fake news article detailing the creation of the Pokémon Mewtwo. It takes place in the world of Pokémon, specifically the region of Kanto (the location of Pokémon Red version and Pokémon Blue Version), but paralleled it with the real world. I attempted to relate Team Rocket to the modern day, comparing them to a terrorist organization akin to ISIS. I also attempted to make parallels between the creation of Mewtwo with the Chernobyl disaster. I finished with an ironic quote from the secret leader of Team Rocket, Giovanni, about the havoc Team Rocket causes and how they should be brought to justice.
My final genre composition was an open letter to Game Freak concerning the release of the demo of Pokémon Sun Version and Pokémon Moon Version. These demos held the data for every single unreleased Pokémon and were hacked within moments of release to show the secrets of the game one month before its release. This upset a large amount of the player base, and made Pokémon Sun Version and Pokémon Moon Version less enjoyable. They were still fantastic games, but the fact that so much was leaked really hurt the release in my opinion.
